Eva's School Picture

We finally got Eva's school pictures back! I love them.

Somehow she managed to sneak the pink headband to school, because she wasn't wearing that when I dropped her off. But that makes me love the photo even more - the little touch of "Eva fashion". (Like wearing striped rain boots to school EVERY SINGLE DAY, even if the sun is brightly shining!)

Haircuts

The plan on Saturday morning was for Daddy to take all of the kids to the barber shop (yes, barber shop) for some much needed haircuts.

This is what happens when Daddy takes them to the Old Salt Barber Shop.

(I snuck up behind them while they were watching a movie.)

They both came back with French braids! The place I usually take them to certainly does not include French braids in the cost of a haircut! But Miss Cheryl had been asking about the girls, whom she hadn't seen in quite some time, and they were thrilled to return to her.

It really makes me wish I knew how to do French braids.

And this is what happens when your big sister, Amanda, sees how handsome you look with your new haircut: a big lip gloss smooch on the cheek!

Liam and Grandpa Clint

I scanned an old picture of my dad when he was probably around Liam's age.

In this picture, we all see a strong resemblance between Grandpa and Liam! In fact, when Amanda and Eva saw it, they even thought it WAS Liam. When Liam looks sad, it is nearly identical to this photo.

The other day, Liam was wearing an outfit that reminded me of the one Grandpa wore in the picture. I got out the camera and tried to get Liam to wear the same somber expression as Grandpa Clint. No such luck. Whenever Liam sees a camera, he hams it up and says,"Cheeeeeese!" until he sees the flash go off.

Still, you can definitely see where Liam gets his light blond hair from.

What a playhouse!

When Dave began the process of renovating the house bathroom earlier this month, he promised the girls that he would save all of the large boxes and make them a playhouse.

For weeks, the kids worked on "decorating" the boxes with drawings and stickers, even before the fixtures were out of the boxes.

Now, the bathroom is nearly complete and Dave made good on his promise.

Yesterday while Liam napped, Dave and the girls designed and constructed their ideal playhouse. Amanda was adamant that one of the sections be a school. There are windows, doors and even chimneys to allow air to flow.

This morning while I was at Zumba, they put the finishing touches on it.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw this thing! The pictures do not do it justice. It is so sturdy and has several separate rooms.

It is just what the kids had hoped for.

Check this out...

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Math Apples

Amanda is not a fan of math. Not at all. We're working on it, and I think she'll come around gradually. But until it's easy for her, she is not going to enjoy it, I'm afraid.

I came across a blog today that featured Math Apples.

Since I'll always looking for new snack ideas, this a-peeled (ahem, no pun intended) to me.

Maybe now I can incorporate addition into snacktime.

Here's the blog so you can read for yourself.

Eva plays Party Cat

Eva has really taking off with her piano playing in the past month! She practices frequently and diligently.

She has started learning Christmas songs, like Jingle Bells and Jolly Old St Nicholas, which she really enjoys. This week we'll learn Away in a Manger.

Her all-time favorite song is Party Cat, which she plays in this video. The first time she plays it as a solo and the second time, she plays along with the MIDI disk accompaniment.

Veterans Day Parade

The girls had the opportunity to walk in our town's Veterans Day parade this morning, along with the rest of their Razzle Dazzle Dance Studio.

The parade started at the fairgrounds, walked past our house and then stopped at Veterans Park for the ceremony. That made it very convenient for us, since the younger kids were supposed to join in on the parade at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The girls really had fun doing the parade. They waved their flags and marched holding hands for the entire parade. I wondered if Eva would make it the whole mile but at the end, she said she wasn't tired at all.

After we made our way out of the traffic chaos at Library Plaza, I took the girls to PapaGino's for lemonade and a slice of pizza.

They are already looking forward to next year!

Halloween Fun

Halloween was a lot of fun this year, probably because we had a bigger group of kids for trick or treating. It was more about the experience of being together than the amount of "loot" they ended up with.

We started the night off with our traditional Pizza Party at Kim and Eliana's house. After dinner we got everyone into their costumes and waited for cousin Nickolas. Liam and Nick would both be trick or treating for the first time.

Amanda wore her Dalmatian costume from last year's dance recital, the one she wore for the "Doggie in the Window" number. We just put her black leotard underneath it, and added some black leggings to keep her warm.

Eva also wore one of Amanda's dance costumes from last year's recital, the flashy newsgirl outfit. She loved it, especially all of the sequins!

Liam also loved his costume and didn't mind having it on one bit. In fact, he kept the hood up the entire night. It was a good thing he had such a warm, cozy costume because it was a chilly night.

"Trick or treat!"

Once Auntie Angelina and Nick arrived, we all headed over to Amanda's best friend Katelynn's house. We snapped a few pictures, got the kids loaded into the wagon and stroller and then started on our trek around Katelynn's quiet neighborhood.

Liam got the hang of trick or treating by the second house. (At the first house, he walked up to the front door and tried to hug the stranger holding the candy bowl. I remember Amanda doing the same thing when she was younger!) I really didn't think Liam would get much out of the whole experience, but I was wrong. He tried to keep up with his sisters as best he could. We were out for about an hour, but much of it was spent walking up and down the long driveways.

A Great Reading Resouce

When Eva and I work on her reading, I like to incorporate websites into our time together. This makes it more interactive and much more fun for her. And of course, using music and catchy tunes always helps too.

I keep meaning to post this YouTube channel, called Have Fun Teaching, so that I will remember it once Liam starts learning his letters. It is so fantastic!

There is a featured video for each letter of the alphabet, and Eva just loves to sing along and "draw" the letters in the air. We choose a "Letter of the Day" and try to stick to just one letter per day.

Here is the video for the letter A.

I also like the Starfall website because it allows you to play a game with many of the letters.

Here is the Starfall site for the letter A. (Hover over the previous sentence.)

After we have played around with each of these websites and I'm sure that Eva has a grasp on the phonics, we make a list of all the words she can think of that start with that letter. That's always a lot of fun. She really enjoyed it when Grandma Reda and Grandpa Clint were here, and they joined in on the fun.

I also found some great miniature dry erase boards at Staples, the kind that have the writing lines already drawn on them. I bought some colorful dry erase markers with built-in erasers so Eva can choose a color and then practice writing her upper and lower case letter of the day.

If you have preschool age kids, give it a try. It really works!

Weekend in Vermont

Our first "adults only" getaway was a smashing success. It went so well that both parties, kids and grown-ups, would like to do it again soon.
ere
Minutes before we left home, Amanda and Eva gave us a few wrapped presents. There were a few children's books, like Little Bear, for us to read at nighttime before bed. There was a story they had written together. And then there was a Vermont Journal, which Amanda had stapled together. She asked me to write down everything we did so I could tell her when we got home. So, I made sure to fill up every page.

Here's a summary of the trip.

We had a 3 1/2 hour car ride on a beautiful yet chilly fall morning, and we were able to listen to anything we wanted. NPR, pop music, rock music, All Things Considered podcasts - anything BUT kids' stories and toddler tunes. The foliage was vibrant against the blue sky, still plenty of leaves left on the trees.

And then we crossed into New Hampshire, where there was already snow on the ground. This continued all the way to Vermont. As we drove along the river, about 15 miles from our destination, we saw the destruction from the Hurricane Irene floods. Trees were uprooted where the river had rushed and torn through the river banks. We had to take a detour because the road was closed in sections. In other areas, the road was down to just one lane, while the construction crews repaved the asphalt surface.

We arrived at our home for the night, Castle Hill Resort & Spa, around 12:30 pm. We unloaded the car and checked out the room. It was amazing!

We were staying in a castle that had been built in the late 1800's, the first house in Vermont to have full electricity. It was also the first home to have an elevator, but that is no longer in operation. There are only 10 guest rooms in the castle and ours was on the top floor.

Our room was good-sized with a very large cedar closet and a private bathroom. In our hallway, there was an old-fashioned telephone. I took a picture so I could show the kids a bit of history.

Downstairs was the cozy dining room, where dinner was served from 5-10 pm. Next to the dining room was the library, complete with floor to ceiling bookcases, a grand piano and a fireplace. We knew as soon as we arrived that we wanted to spend some time in the "library" or "study" or whatever its formal name was.

After a quick tour of the place, we headed into the next town for a quick lunch. Everyone there was talking about the big snowstorm that was on its way. They were predicting a foot of snow, and we started to get worried about our drive home the next day.

Our room came with $25 vouchers for each of us at the on-site Aveda Spa so we decided to splurge on late afternoon massages and a dip in the outdoor hot tub. If you have never been in a hot tub while the snowflakes fall from the sky, I would recommend that you try it. It is a strange sensation for your face to be cool while the rest of you is submerged in steamy, bubbling water.

Before our 8:00 dinner reservation, we decided to head down to the study and have a drink in front of the fireplace.

When we first arrived, Dave joked that he wanted to get a photo in front of the fireplace, wearing slippers, holding a pipe and a snifter of brandy. How ironic his statement turned out to be when shortly before dinner, he realized that he had forgotten his black dress shoes.

We met a really nice middle-aged couple from the north shore, near where Dave lived when he was a kid. In fact, we were enjoying their company so much that our hostess had to remind us twice that our table was ready. Not only were they fun to talk to, but pretty good with a camera as well!
(If you enlarge the photo, you will notice the lack of footwear. The choices were, dine in black socks... or wear white sneakers. What would you have done?)

Our dining experience was definitely a memorable one. I cannot even refer to it as "dinner", because it was so much more than that. As our waitress explained, they want you to relax and enjoy dinner the way they would have back then. It was much more of an "event" than a "meal."

How fitting that the very first appetizer choice was Prince Edward Island Mussels, the site of our honeymoon. And yes, of course we ordered those... along with the escargot. So delicious.

We also had the french onion soup and lobster bisque, which were pretty good. For our entrees, Dave had the Beef Wellington and I had Sea Bass. Midway through our meal, someone sat down at the grand piano and began playing Billy Joel and Elton John tunes. It turned out to be a guest from an on-site wedding and he was pretty good!

Unfortunately we are not used to eating so late and by the time our entrees came out, we were losing momentum. When 10:00 rolled around and we still hadn't dessert, we decided to get it "to go." I would definitely do it all again, but would stick to an earlier reservation next time.

The next morning we were relieved to find that it hadn't snowed as much as they had predicted, so our drive home was an easy one. We stopped at a Country Store and spent at least an hour there perusing the food, old-fashioned toys, candy, and other miscellaneous items. We got a great start on our Christmas shopping and ended up with some unique gifts.

When we pulled into the driveway at home, all three kids were standing on the porch yelling in excitement by the time we opened the car doors. They had such a great time with Omi, which was a relief, but even better was the fact that Omi was in one piece and didn't look at all worn out by them. She said they had been wonderful, so hopefully we can do this all again before another seven years pass.

2011 Halloween Costume Recital

Yesterday was our annual Costume Recital here at the studio.

This year my studio is made up of all girls, the youngest being Eva (4) and the oldest being Olivia (Senior in High School.)

I will post more details later today, but for now, here is the video of Eva's and Amanda's performances.

Our first getaway without the kids

It has been over six years now since Dave and I have had a night to ourselves, sans kids. Thinking we were long overdue, I jumped on a great Groupon deal several months ago. The deal was for a one night stay at the Castle Hill Resort and Spa in Ludlow, Vermont. The usual $329/night was being offered through Groupon for $99/night (with certain blackout dates), so of course it was just too good to pass up. I went ahead and bought it, figuring it would be a good 7th anniversary gift for us.

The time has come for us to finally cash in on this night away. We are leaving early Saturday morning and will return sometime on Sunday. (It is a 3 1/2 hour drive, so a good portion of the time will be spent in the car but at least the scenery will be beautiful! Fall foliage is quite a bit behind this year, so that has worked to our advantage.)

The girls will be staying with Omi... in between going to Dance class, having a babysitter for a few hours, and an evening pizza party with Uncle Jason, Auntie Angelina and cousin Nick.

Although I should be excited about this mini getaway, I am having trouble mustering up the enthusiasm. Obstacles keep appearing in our path and I'm starting to wonder if it's happening for a reason.

1 - Dave's car, the one we will be driving to Vermont, suddenly had a brake issue. On his way home from work last night, he had to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor. Not good! $400 later, the brakes are repaired. Problem #1 solved.

2 - Amanda has been up several times during the night with a persistent cough. At least once per night I have been administering the albuterol inhaler. Then a few days ago, Liam started waking up in the middle of the night crying. Then a runny nose and cough started. Last night he woke up at 10:30 pm screaming in pain, and it lasted basically the entire night. Dave and I took turns trying to comfort him and get him to sleep, but it meant keeping him in an upright position. Not very comfortable for sleeping. A trip to the doctor this morning showed that he has a bad ear infection, and he was prescribed codeine and an antibiotic. By afternoon, he was back to his happy, playful self. Hopefully tonight will be a more restful night for everyone. Problem #2, partially solved.

3 - I use my iPhone to write notes to myself, things like grocery lists or things that have to be done. Today I found a new note called "Why?" that I didn't remember writing. As it turns out, it was something Amanda had written at some point, unbeknownst to me.

Talk about a guilt trip! We still have two more days to go... What will happen next??

An Ideal Fall Day

Yesterday was the perfect afternoon for a trip to R&C Farms in Scituate. I had gotten half price admission tickets to the Corn Maze, so after Liam woke up from his nap, we headed out.

For some reason, I thought they had advertised a 70 acre Corn Maze. I think the farm itself was 70 acres; the Corn Maze was held on just 3 acres. Oops, just a slight difference! (Just this past week, there was a news story about a family with a 3 week old baby that actually got lost in a Corn Maze and had to call the police from their cell phone.)

Ready or not, here we come!

I took a picture of the maze layout, just in case.

As it turned out, we didn't need it at all because we had Eva, chief navigator, with us.

We were in and out of that maze in maybe 6 minutes. We all wanted to go through it again and this time we took turns deciding which turns to make. Eva became frustrated with us, insisting that we were "going the wrong way!" She must have been born with some sort of internal GPS system! The second time through the maze took slightly longer.

Amanda wanted to take some pictures for her blog. She may actually have a future in photo journalism!

On our way out, we each picked an apple. Dave chose Gala while the rest of us chose Honeycrisp. He may have regretted his decision because the Honeycrisp apples were out of this world. And at just 50 cents a pound, I asked myself later why I hadn't thought to buy a few pounds worth! What was I thinking?!

Our local grocery store only carries a few varieties of apples, not Honeycrisps either, and they are usually around $2.00/lb. I am seriously contemplating a return trip this week to stock up for our fruit bowl. (Speaking of which, ever since I bought a trifle bowl, which I keep filled with fruit, the kids are eating more fruit than ever. Plus, it makes a nice centerpiece.)

We still had a few hours of daylight left so we spent some time at the Purple Dinosaur playground in Scituate. I hadn't taken the kids there in years and they were glad to return.

It is a perfect playground for Liam as all of the equipment seems geared toward the 3 and younger crowd. The last time we had been there, there were a few of the yellow and red Cozy Coupes, which are always a hit with young kids. Yesterday it seemed like a ride-on toy graveyard!

It was as if everyone had discarded their children's outgrown toys. (Dave said it gave him a few ideas of what to do with all of ours in the next year or two.) It was actually really nice because it eliminated fighting over the best toys.

In the sandbox area, there were more yellow dump trucks and backhoes than you could shake a stick at. Between the lawn mower, wagon, and various bikes, Liam was in toddler heaven!

And the perfect ending to the day? Amanda finally lost Tooth #6.

But I will let her tell that story on her own blog.

Take Your Parent to School Day

I had a really relaxing morning doing arts and crafts with Eva today at Take Your Parent to School Day.

We started in the "Wet and Messy Room" where we made a haunted house scene together.

There were all sorts of odds and ends available to us... Qtips, foam cut-outs, foil, cotton, etc. It was a lot of fun to be creative together. Eva had some great ideas about where to place things in our scary scene.

Next Eva gave me a tour of the classroom, starting with the Playdough table. There were lumps of homemade aromatic orange playdough, scented with pumpkin pie spice. Then we saw the rice table and water table, both of which were filled with various Halloween themed bottles and containers.

And then, on to the wasp galls secured to branches. I learned that galls are the round balls that house wasps' eggs. At least, that's what I got out of it! And finally, to the cricket habitat. Eva pointed out the two crickets in the corner, making their happy chirpy noises.

Then we put on red smocks and painted a leaf together. Red, yellow and orange... and then Eva went over it all with a foamy sponge roller to give it a blended look. We had a lot of fun at that station.

We took a snack break - apple juice and a mini bagel with cream cheese for Eva, coffee for Mama.

Once we refueled, we were ready for our biggest project of the day: constructing a zoo made out of wooden blocks. We ended up finding so many tigers that there wasn't enough room for any other animals. Eva's friend Olivia watched us for a while, looking like she wanted to get in on the action, so after a while, she and her dad started building next to us. Their contribution was the giraffe exhibit.

Before we knew it, the hour was up and it was time to clean up. When we got home, we hung up all of Eva's art projects in my studio. It was perfect timing because I have my Costume Recital in under two weeks and I needed some decorations!

What a fun morning it was... I miss school!

Picture Day

Today is Picture Day for Eva. She took great pride in choosing her fanciest dress and got dressed this morning without any complaints. She looked absolutely adorable... (er, beautiful!)... when she walked down the sidewalk with her Tinkerbell backpack on her back.

And ironically, just today we just received the digital copy of Amanda's 1st grade school picture. I think this just might be my favorite picture of her, even with all those missing teeth and the fresh mosquito bite she got on the way to school! It makes me smile every time I look at it.

As soon as we get Eva's pictures back, I will send out copies of both photos to the family.

I would still like to get a professional picture of all three kids before the end of the year. Otherwise, the traditional Christmas family photo in front of the tree will have to suffice.

Book Borrow

This morning I left the house early in search of bargains at one of the seasonal consignment sales in our area. Dave stayed home with the kids, which allowed me a few much-needed hours of freedom.

When I returned home, this is what I saw.

According to Dave, Amanda and Eva had worked all morning setting up a "Book Borrow" stand in the front yard. They had blankets, pillows, and an umbrella all set up. The best part was their homemade sign, made of several pieces of paper, taped together and attached to a large branch.

I asked Amanda what a Book Borrow was. She told me that people could come into the barn to browse through her books, and take some home to borrow. Similar to a lemonade stand, I suppose, except no money was being exchanged. They even had a pretty gift bag ready and waiting, so their "customer" could tote their books home with them.

I love the arrow pointing "That way. Come now please."

You would not believe how enthusiastic she and Eva were about their idea! They stood out there in the yard for a very long time.

Unfortunately they were set up a good 40 feet back from the road, so it wasn't even possible for passing cars to READ their sign, much less even notice them standing out there. But they were troopers.

After a while, Amanda quietly asked,"Mama, why isn't anyone coming?"

I felt horrible. My heart absolutely ached for her. She was so disappointed to have gone to all of that work and have no one pull into the driveway. It made me sad and I didn't know what to tell her.

Luckily I was able to distract her with something later and I reluctantly took down her display. But I kept the sign, propped up behind the barn, simply because I didn't have the heart to throw it away.

(On a side note, a few days ago, Amanda told me that she wanted to be a Librarian when she grows up, so she can "stamp all of the books." So I guess this is just an extension of her wish. I admire her creativity and passion for books. I hope her lack of business doesn't discourage her.)

So Long, Farewell, auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye!

Grandpa Clint and Grandma Reda left this morning after a wonderful stay with us. (Well, wonderful in OUR eyes, at least!) I am sure they will be glad to get back to retired life and a slower lifestyle pace. I think our regimented life was a bit hectic for them, always running here and there, keeping an eye on the clock to make sure we weren't late dropping off or picking up one of the kids.

It was hard to see them go. Some of the memories we will cherish from our time with them include:

- Open House at Amanda's school
- The girls' sleepover in the barn, complete with movies!
- The girls' trip to the theater to see Dolphin Tale
- Poopsie's pizza!!!!
- Playing games... like Pretty, Pretty Princess (with Grandma AND Grandpa!)
- Trips to the playground
- Walking to and from school, and little hikes here and there
- Eating Friendly's, Dairy Queen and McDonald's... without Mama and Daddy!
- Cuddling and reading book after book
- The "grown up's trip" to Hola for tapas
- OktoberFest (cheering us on during the Beer Stein contests, where Dave and I each finished 2nd. No drinking was involved, by the way... this was merely a contest of strength.)
- The side trip to Hull and exploring the Fort
- Building block towers and playing cars with Liam
- And of course, all of the help: yardwork, babysitting, and other household chores

Here are some photos to summarize their time with us.
