Saying goodbye to Nana

The past few days have been very difficult. Trying to explain to the kids the concept of death, what a funeral is, and what heaven is like... Lots of tears, hugs, and talking.

We will all miss Nana. I am so glad that Amanda and I got one last visit with her at Christmas time. We will hold on to those happy memories and keep Nana's love in our pockets.

Eva suggested that God had called Nana up to Heaven because "she had already done all of the fun stuff on earth and there was nothing left for her to do here."

Liam wanted to know if Grandma Jo got to see Nana actually float up to Heaven.

Nana and Papa on their wedding day

Nana and Papa on their anniversary

This is something Amanda wrote at bedtime on Thursday evening, before we knew that Nana had passed away.

Amanda had a very special bond with Nana. She says that now Nana is her guardian angel.

Amanda's first multi-girl Slumber Party

Katelynn, Julia and Amanda had been planning a slumber party for a while. We finally coordinated and made it happen.

Amanda asked each of the girls to bring along their favorite board game. They love games as much as we do so it's been a fun night for the whole family. Before we knew it, it was time to get ready for bed.

A full day of:
Swimming...
PlayStation 3...
Spaghetti dinner...
A game of Clue with the entire family, followed by Apples to Apples...
Ice cream...
A movie with only the 10 year olds...

And a sleepover in the family room.

These three best friends are loving it!

The two friends get along really well with Liam and Eva, so that's a bonus.

Nothing better than a refreshing pool on a 90* day!

Playing Clue... Dave won.

I scream, you scream.... (All together now.)

Almost time to say goodnight to the youngest two...

The girls have plans to stay up all night long. They have also volunteered to make pancakes for breakfast, so we'll see how Plan 1 affects Plan 2.

I have a feeling there will be a lot more sleepovers in our future...hopefully with these same girls.

The Beach Boys: Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis, MA

We knew that we would likely hit traffic on the way to the Cape, so we left 2 hours before the concert began.  Good thing we did... Traffic was stop and go, especially over the bridge.

We made it to Hyannis with an hour to spare, so we stopped off at the nearby Cape Cod Brewery. As it turns out, that was perfect timing.

The atmosphere was that of a low-key cookout.  There were picnic tables and umbrellas set up in the courtyard. Music was playing, two separate Cornhole boards set up, and a food truck was selling hot dogs, homemade ice cream bars, and the kids' favorite: soft pretzels. For the adults, there was beer sampling of their five beers that are brewed on site, and included a souvenir Cape Cod glass.

When we went inside for a self-guided tour, we found not only a full gift shop but a vacant Foosball table. We had a lively family competition over several Foosball matches. It was such a fun and relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We arrived at the concert about half an hour early, so plenty of time to park and find our seats. As we made our way to the entrance, we realized that there were not many kids in attendance!

When I first found out that The Beach Boys were coming to the South Shore, I knew we had to get tickets. They are Amanda's all time favorite band. She knows all of the albums, the songs, the lyrics and bits of fun trivia.

I purchased our tickets the day they went on sale, way back in the winter. I was 'assigned' five seats, but had no idea if the seats would be good or not. However, all seats at the Melody Tent are 50 feet or closer to the stage so you really can't lose.

As we walked into the venue, an usher gave each of the kids a colored lei and led us to our seats. I was surprised as we kept getting closer and closer to the stage....

As it turns out, I couldn't have selected better seats if I had looked at a seating chart.

We were in row 3 - about 10 feet from the stage!!! .

When the group walked down through the crowd to the stage, I thought it was just the crew warming up the instruments.  It took me a few seconds to realized that this WAS The Beach Boys.  There was only one original member with them that day: Mike Love. (He's the one pointing..)

Edit: Dave and I both looked this up, and learned that Bruce Johnston was also there. They talked about how he was the one who wrote I Write The Songs for Barry Manilow.

The stage at the Melody Tent is just like the one at Cohasset's Music Circus. It rotates very slowly, so every few minutes, the band makes a rotation and you have a perfect view. At times, it felt like Mike Love was singing directly to us. He made eye contact with the kids a few times, and even waved to them. That made things pretty exciting.

Although it was absolutely sweltering inside of the giant tent, the kids were great sports and never complained. It was so much fun to look over at them in their seats...clapping and singing along.

Be True To Your School

I hope Eva was inspired after watching the drummer.

Their Hearts Were Full of Spring (a capella)
This was originally done by The Four Freshmen, and one of the former members now plays guitar for The Beach Boys.

Help Me Rhonda

The final song of the night was Fun, Fun, Fun - the perfect way to end the show.

I lost track of how many times Amanda thanked us for taking her to the show. We have to thank Grandpa Clint and Grandma Reda as well, for this is how we chose to spend the Christmas money from them.

I have to say, taking the whole family to this particular concert was money well-spent. I don't think the kids will ever forget their first concert, and this was something that the entire family thoroughly enjoyed. I'm happy to see that they share our appreciation of live music.

We made it out of the parking lot in record time, and headed north toward home. We stopped off in Kingston and had dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant.

Another great summer memory to add to our collection...

Evening Bonfire on Rexhame Beach

After dinner, we met Omi, Jason, Angelina, and the kids down at Rexhame Beach for an evening bonfire.

Earlier in the day, there had been a Great White shark sighting at Duxbury Beach...so there were restrictions on all of the Marshfield beaches.

"Only knee deep" was the warning.

However, by 6:00 pm, as the lifeguards were all heading home, there were no longer any warnings posted. Still, we played it pretty safe... And didn't venture too far out.

An abandoned Boogie board...

Aubrey absolutely adores Uncle David and always wants to be held by him.

There was a beautiful sunset.

One of my very favorite shots...

Panoramic view, taken by Amanda (Nice work!)

And of course, a bonfire....and marshmallows.

There were a few other bonfires on the beach, and as it got dark, we saw three separate fireworks displays. Nothing huge, but it was enough to get the kids excited.

We hope to do this again when Grandma Jo and Brady come in two weeks. It's such a relaxing way to end the day.

Results of MMF Contest

The girls received the MMF contest results and adjudication comments in the mail today.

They did extremely well and I am so, so, SO proud of them. The judge's comments were spot on - all things we had talked about while in the learning process.

Amanda scored 96/100.

Eva scored 94/100.

Both received Superior ratings! Hooray!

I hope they will both decide to enter again next year.

Dinner Club - Camping

After a failed attempt at camping last year due to severe weather, our Dinner Club decided to try again this year. To play it safe, we planned a backyard campout at our house.

It was a really fun time, despite a downpour with thunder and lightning just one hour before everyone arrived. It was like déjà vu. Luckily Dave saw it coming and we had just enough time to cover the three tents that had been set up earlier, as well as the campfire! The night was salvaged.

As usual, we had a feast of everything under the sun. Bacon wrapped dates, ham wrapped asparagus, chips with guacamole and salsa - and those were just the apps! Chicken, sausages, kielbasa, hot dogs, and an assortment of veggies and fruit.... It's not called Dinner Club for nothing!

Dave tried a recipe in our brand new Lodge cast iron kettle and it is most definitely a keeper: Alton Brown's Pork and Beans. He even threw in some of our home grown jalapeño peppers.

After an afternoon of swimming, great music and stuffing our bellies, Dave got the campfire going. In the meantime, Ryan entertained the kids with his remote control 'drone', and someone suddenly spotted a spontaneous rainbow...then a double rainbow.

Immediately after the rainbow disappeared, the sky turned to a beautiful brilliant pink.

We had our campfire and s'mores, followed by a movie for the kids....and then the arduous task of getting the kids to sleep. It was a team effort.  Six of the kids piled into one tent, and one by one, they left to sleep in the parents' tent. After numerous tent reassignments and one faulty air mattress, all of the kids were finally asleep by 11. (Charlie, the four year old, was the last one to give in to sleep.)

The next morning, I was up at 5:30 am to make breakfast for the troops.

As we enjoyed our coffee, we shared stories about the loud growling in the woods that had scared even the grown-ups, and about how next time our friends would bring earplugs to drown out the "Rainforest birds" that begin their cacophony at 4:30 am. (I had warned everyone but they thought I was only kidding...). Not a lot of sleep was had, but plenty of memories were made.

All things considered, it was a success and there will definitely be a 'next time.'
