Drums

She did it!  Eva graduated from the practice pad to the full drum kit.

Yesterday was her third lesson, and her teacher decided it was time to start on the kit.  He taught her the names of all of the drums/cymbals, how to adjust everything, and how to turn the snare on/off.  Then they started working on coordinating everything.

Last week she learned paradiddles, which is one of the rudiments.  It doesn't look like much at first glance, but when Eva explained the 'up', 'down', 'tap' strokes to me...combined with switching which hand plays the accent... Well, it was like trying to rub your belly and pat your head.

After she had both hands going, she added a foot for the bass drum. And then, she crossed her hands so that one hand plays the snare and the other plays the high hat.

This teacher is SERIOUS and explained that a 'model student' should be practicing for a half hour, three times a day.  Yeah.  Serious.

I recorded Eva after her lesson yesterday, so that she will be able to see her progress in a few weeks.  Eventually her paradiddles will start getting faster and faster.

I am so glad that she loves her lessons (and her teacher) so much.  She looks forward to it each week, and it's great for her to have something that is all hers.
